StoneThread Fantasy & Science Fiction Short Story Contest
Since I’ve been working on fantasy and folktale short stories this year, contests seeking fantasy catch my attention; especially those with no entry fee. Thanks for the tip from C. Hope Clark’s FFW Small Markets Newsletter for this one:
StoneThread Fantasy & Science Fiction Short Story Contest
“The result of this contest will be an anthology to honor Ray Bradbury, one of America’s great writers, who died on June 6, 2012 at the age of 91. We’re seeking fantasy and sociological science fiction short stories to create an anthology in his honor. Bradbury knew the conventions of science fiction, but rather than focusing on the hard science, his stories dealt with the human reaction to science or the effect of science on the human race.
“As Bradbury himself said regarding the blurred line between SF and Fantasy, ‘Science fiction is the art of the possible, not the art of the impossible. As soon as you deal with things that can’t happen, you are writing fantasy.’ We want stories in which science or magic plays a role but is not the main ingredient. The focus should be on the effect of science or magic on the characters or their reaction to it. With that in mind, send us your best.”
- First Prize: $50 (All winning entries and honorable mentions will be included in the anthology.)
- Second – Sixth Prize: $20
- Honorable Mentions: $10
- Deadline: July 31, 2012
- Length: 1,500- 15,000 words
- Click here for guidelines and submission information.
Best of luck to call of you who enter!

Hey, thanks for mentioneing our contest, and I hope to see one or more entries from you. As a publisher, I like anything that’s well written. As a writer, my favorite is magic realism in the tradition of Marquez and Allende.
I love Ray Bradbury’s work. It’ll be interesting to see how similar or dissimilar to his work the anthology stories are.
Best of luck with the contest, Harvey.
Me too, Smoky.
